What is True Freedom?

Lately, I have been a prisoner of my own mind. I have been standing eye to eye with my own shadows, but instead of embracing them to give me strength, I have fought them drowning in the emotion of fear. This has been overwhelming to the point of feeling powerless, one of the most negative emotions there is. Or at least that I have experienced. This feeling of captivity triggered me to think about freedom. What is true freedom?

I live in The Netherlands, famous for it’s freedom of religion, freedom of speech, freedom of political preference, freedom of choice. I have never experienced war, physical captivity or suppression of any kind (other then the attempt of control of my parents). But still, I have experienced being a prisoner. Prisoner of my own mind. And all the wealth and material stuff surrounding me did not set me free. They did not have any significant meaning to me, other then the physical comfort they had to offer.

True freedom is a state of being, a state of mind. And as your thoughts are the only thing you can control, true freedom is a choice. This is a very powerful statement. It gives you the power to experience true freedom in any condition, as long as you make a deliberate choice to do so.

True freedom is a choice, and you have the freedom to choose. Choose freedom.
